Refugee Challenge I guided creatives to refine their ideas for the What Design Can Do: Refugee Challenge. Gave them feedback on their entries, identified the areas that needed more research and elaborated on how they could take their idea to the next level. It was very cool to see the diversity of ideas, the different approaches they took in conveying their message and above all I enjoyed to be part of the creative process.

Lab School  I helped to organize a lab school week during which a team form Hong Kong came to the Netherlands to learn the specific social lab method of Kennisland. I interviewed individuals from the municipality of Nijmegen and Dordrecht who worked with Kennisland on different projects, to capture what impact the social lab method had on how they currently work. Furthermore I was in charge of communication with the different organisations involved during the week.  I gained a lot of energy of from seeing how the people grew in the process and was intrigued by their perspective on the methods we were using.

Plaatsmakers I helped to set up a new social lab in Amsterdam Nieuw-West which is mapping what nuisance means to people in the neighbourhood. I did preliminary research, collected stories of people in the neighbourhood and was involved in the formation of the team.  I had of fun talking to different people in the neighbourhood and it was interesting to hear how different people experienced the same occurrences. It opened my eyes on how important thorough storytelling is for a design process.

Framing the Sochi Winter Olympics My bachelor thesis explored the use of framing in two local U.S. newspapers on the LGBT rights related to the Sochi Winter Olympics in the light of the Russian anti-gay propaganda law. The thesis examined the influence of political preference of the readership of newspapers on news coverage. I gained insight in the agenda setting function of newspaper media and it further sparked my interest in the (un)conscious use of framing by media,

Groenlab In the social labs team I contributed to a project in Schiedam which explored what people need to happily grow old as a response to the shift of responsibility towards citizens themselves as a result of decentralization. The project was already in its final stages when I joined the team. I especially worked on the final presentation of the project where people of the people from the municipality were present and individuals who had contributed to the project. I helped to elaborate on how we could best present our results, maintained contact with media and made tools to communicate the findings.   I gained a lot of knowledge on how to best communicate your idea, process and findings. Something that was quite an unexplored area for me.

Oxfam Grow campaign As part of my Hyper Island programme I worked on a brief for Oxfam to redesign their Grow campaign in order to mobilize audiences in a way other than online petitions. In response to this my team decided to narrow down the scope of the campaign as the current campaign lacked focus which generated passiveness among the audience rather than mobilizing them. Therefore we decided to focus on food waste in Western counties and came up with three concrete interventions Oxfam could execute to mobilize an audience for their grow campaign.

IKEA Exhibition In light of the 'Life at Home' report of 2016, which was focused on the feeling of home beyond the physical space, IKEA challenged us to come up with a way to let visitors of the IKEA museum explore the intangible experience of home in a tangible manner. We were assigned a specific part of the museum. My team came up with an exhibition build around 4 storylines of a morning in someone's home, designed to trigger people to think about their own home. Each sense would be separately stimulated and as they walked through the space they got more pieces of the sensorial home experience of the subject of the story. Our goal was to challenge people to go beyond the general notions of the comfort of home and trigger visitors to think of their homes as a sensorial experience. What makes your home?

Matching app During my time at Kennisland I worked on an app as part of 'InnovatieImpuls Onderwijs' which aimed to make the practical knowledge of innovators working in primary and high school more widely available to those interested in innovating in their own school but didn't know how, have the tools or know where to start. I helped facilitate the co-creation sessions, took on some tasks for the organisation of an event, and made some basic designs of the app and other tools needed during the project.  I learned a lot about ideation, prototyping and human centered research. It actually got me in the direction I'm going now.
